A simple vanilla cupcake topped with black coloured vanilla flavoured buttercream frosting, a sprinkling of silver glitter and decorated with edible eyes. This cake decoration is the perfect way to celebrate the spooky season!
I created this bake because I wanted something really simple. Something that would work for Halloween, taste good and keep simplicity at its core. I love that this doesn’t take a million ingredients to make, 1/2 a day to prepare and is completely unobtainable. The base of this is my basic vanilla sponge cake, topped with a vanilla buttercream. Once the cakes are baked and cooled the icing can be made. Once the basic vanilla buttercream is ready you can start to prepare the Halloween themed decorations.
Halloween

To decorate I used store bought eyeball decorations and dyed the buttercream black. To do this, I used a paste icing food colouring. I would recommend using a paste colour over a runny liquid food colouring as the paste colourings are a lot more vibrant and liquid versions can ruin the consistency of the buttercream. As always, add as much or as little as you like in order to get your desired colour. Give it a good mix between each addition of the food colouring to ensure that you get your desired colour. I went for a really dark grey rather than jet black. Here is my simple guide on colouring buttercream frosting with a food colouring paste.
I used my ‘tall tower’ technique to ice the cakes to give the icing volume in order to hold more decoration. On top of this, I lightly sprinkled ‘Metallic Light Silver’ cake dust, this just helps to give it a little sparkle. For the finishing touch I added the edible eyes. Place these all around the cake with no particular pattern or order, trying to place in a variety of places and heights. Ensuring you cover every side of the cake.
And that’s it, my super simple Halloween cupcake.
