I’ve always struggled to find a good skincare routine that leaves my face looking and feeling soft, smooth and glowing. Naturally, the skin on my face is quite dry and sensitive and that always makes it tricky to find products that I feel actually work – or ones that I can use continuously without having to change my entire routine every 3 months because my skin has started to resemble scales.
That’s the reason it’s taken me so long to find my ideal skincare routine. I’ve tried so many different products, but I’ve finally found a combination that I absolutely love! My routine consists of a few basic things; a good face wash (always!), toner, serum and face cream. I follow the same routine morning and evening, and ALWAYS make sure that any makeup I’m wearing is thoroughly washed off before I go to bed.
So, here it is: My Super Simple Skincare Routine…
First up, face wash. This is probably one of the most important steps. A good face wash will remove any impurities and dirt, thoroughly clean your skin and add in a little bonus moisture.
I’ve tried so many different face washes and have way too often been left with dry patches, flaky skin, or skin that just doesn’t feel clean. But then I found the Tea Tree Skin Clearing Facial Wash from Body Shop, and I honestly haven’t looked for another product since.
I love, love, LOVE this face wash. It is infused with Community Trade tea tree oil from the foothills of Mount Kenya, and smells divine! Tea Tree can be quite an acquired smell – I mean I know it can smell quite strong and clinical to some but I, personally, always associate the strong scent of tea tree with cleanliness. So, this really is my ideal cleanser! As an added bonus, as with all Body Shop products, this face wash is 100% Cruelty Free and this particular one is also suitable for vegans.
Once applied, this wash forms a light lather when rubbed into the skin and leaves your face feeling smooth, clean and helps to remove any excess oil without being too drying. This is one of the most important things for me as normally products that remove the excess oil are WAY too harsh for my dry, sensitive skin. And, this has seriously helped me with my spots. I honestly can’t remember the last time that I had a big break out (please don’t jinx me), and I am definitely thanking this wash. I use this morning and evening, and I always use this to remove my makeup. This has the ability to remove even my most stubborn mascara! It isn’t too harsh and always leaves my skin feeling soft, healthy and smooth.
Straight after face wash comes the toner. I’ve tried so many different toners promising me this and that, and am always left disappointed. So I decided to stop wasting my money and just make my own. I know that this may sound super complicated and unrealistic but it’s actually so easy and cheap to make. My secret… Rosewater. Yep, just one natural ingredient is all you need. I buy the cheap bottles from the cooking section of my local supermarket. And just transfer the liquid into a reusable spray bottle and it lasts for months.
Why rosewater? It helps to maintain the skins pH balance and helps to remove excess oil from the skin. It also helps to get rid of redness, creating a more even skin tone and helps to reduce spots. It’s amazing moisturising properties mean that it always leaves my face looking and feeling super smooth and soft. And, as a bonus, smells sooo good!
Vitamin C Serum
I love Viola Skin Vitamin C serum. It’s quite oily when initially applied, but soaks in super quickly. And leaves my skin feeling refreshed and hydrated, without leaving my t-zone all shiny – which is one of my pet hates. The serum contains 98% of pure natural ingredients, which makes it perfect for my sensitive skin.
Although this isn’t a priority for me at the moment (I have a baby face as it is!), this serum is meant to be full of ‘powerful anti-ageing ingredients’. Including Vitamin C – which is known for it’s anti-ageing properties and Vitamin E to help with cell regeneration. Even though fine lines aren’t my main concern, I just love how this leaves my face feeling. It really helps to replenish my skin and provides a nice smooth layer, which makes applying makeup so much easier.
A quick word of warning, with this you really need to be careful about how often you’re using it. I know the bottle says everyday, and that’s where I took my guidance from. But it completely stripped my skin when I followed the instructions on the packaging. It left me with a painful, red face; and I found it impossible to apply anything to my skin without being left with a severe stinging sensation.
I later realised this was probably due to the hyaluronic acid found in the serum. Although this ingredient is said to help to retain skin moisture and the bottle only contains a small dose, it is still an acid and should be used sparingly! Because of this, I found it best to only use this serum around twice a week. I use it twice a week on a Monday and Thursday evening. Simply pump a little bit onto your hands or on a cotton pad, and wipe all over your face until fully absorbed.
I always find it hard when trying to find a cream for dry skin. While I want to find a cream that adds a bit of moisture. I don’t want to feel like I’ve got a thick, greasy layer sitting on top of my skin or am left super shiny. That’s why I love Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream; it’s moisturising, soft and hydrating and leaves my skin feeling and looking nourished all day long. Even in winter when I’m left battling harsh weather conditions and air conditioning, I’m still left with silky smooth skin. Which, trust me, is an achievement for me! This is by far my favourite face cream.
There You Have It
There you have it, a run down of all my favourite products and an insight into my skin care routine. It took me a long time to get here, and I’ve tried a lot of different products. But these are by far the best ones that I’ve found to tackle my dry, sensitive skin. And leave my skin looking and feeling flake free and supple all day.
So, here’s another quick run down of my skincare routine for you;
- First start by washing skin with Body Shop’s Tea Tree Skin Clearing Facial Wash.
- Next tone with a quick spray of rosewater. You can apply the rosewater directly onto a cotton pad and wipe over face if you don’t have a spray bottle. Allow the toner to fully dry before moving on.
- Up next is the hydrating boost from Maritime Naturals Vitamin C serum. This adds a quick dose of moisture leaving your skin feeling soft and hydrated. Add a very small amount (a little goes a long way) either to your hands or to a cotton pad and wipe all over your face and neck. Allowing it to fully dry before moisturising. Remember to only use this twice a week!
- Lastly massage a pea-sized amount of Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream to your face and neck. Wait a few minutes for this to be absorbed before applying any makeup.
The Three Essentials
On top of this, I try to apply a face mask at least once a week to really cleanse my skin and help to remove the makeup build up and impurities from the previous week. For good skin there’s three things that you really need; a good facial routine morning and evening, a face mask once a week and if you can, a nice facial once a month.
Face products and skin care may seem expensive but it really is so important. Your face is the one thing that’s constantly on show, and is always exposed to the harsh weather conditions. So it really is important to make sure that you take care of it. Of course you don’t have to use these products, but I’ve personally found that these are the ones that have best helped my skin.
